Pennsylvania Discount Hotels - Pittsburgh Travel Guide - Pittsburgh City Overview

Pittsburgh, a city in western Pennsylvania and seat of Allegheny County. Pittsburgh was America's foremost industrial city of the 19th century and was extremely famous for its steel production. Starting in the 1970s, it underwent severe deindustrialization as its massive steel companies began to close. Today, Pittsburgh is a postindustrial city, with it's economy based on services, especially medical, corporate, financial, and educational.

The city of Pittsburgh is remarkable for its grand entrances, especially if came upon from the west through the Fort Pitt tunnel and bridge, or from the north on Interstate 279 and the Veterans bridges or Fort Duquesne. Pittsburgh heart remains hidden by hills until travelers come upon its central business district, the Golden Triangle, which rests where the Monongahela and Allegheny rivers come together to form the Ohio River. Greeting tourists and visitors is Point State Park, with its tall fountain at the triangle’s tip, and a solid number of uniquely designed skyscrapers and buildings.

Pittsburgh is a major educational city. The city’s most well recognized universities are

Carnegie Mellon University (founded by Andrew Carnegie in 1900); the University of Pittsburgh (founded in 1787); and Duquesne University (founded in 1878). The Mellon Research Institute, which was at one time the largest private research laboratory in America, is now part of the Carnegie Mellon University. The University of Pittsburgh features the 42-story Cathedral of Learning, the tallest school building in America and a major medical center. Other educational institutions in Pittsburgh are Point Park College (1960); the women’s schools Chatham College (1869) and Carlow College (1929); Robert Morris College (1921), in nearby Coraopolis; and the Community College of Allegheny County (1966), with branches in the city and suburbs.

Pittsburgh is home to many professional sports teams. The Pittsburgh Pirates of Major League Baseball are featured in PNC Park. The Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League play at Heinz Field. And the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League play in Mellon Arena. What makes things even better is that all three professional teams have won world championships.
